Scientific publications on horse-related topics

Dr. Deb's professional bibliography to date, as well as her technical papers, are listed in the section of this website called "Dr. Deb's Publications."

In-depth papers published in 1992 as part of the Elsevier Encyclopedia of Animal Science – and which are generally very difficult to find even through Interlibrary Loan services -- will soon be posted at this Website under "Knowledge Base". These papers cover the origin and evolutionary relationships of the horse family and the origin and interrelationships of modern horse breeds.

Numerous other out-of-print articles by Dr. Deb also appear in the "Knowledge Base" section of this Website. All of these articles are free and can be downloaded through your home printer.

"Poison Plants in the Pasture:
A Horse Owner's Guide"

by Deb Bennett, Ph.D.

Dr. Deb's latest contribution to your horse kowledge
Specifically focused on the plants your horse lives with.

Which ones are friends? Which ones might poison your horse?

Learn What's Out There in Your Pasture!

This book makes it easy and fun. Written totally from the horse owner's point of view. No technical knowledge required - 1,500 beautiful big photos and illustrations clearly show you the points to look for in each plant.

This is the best pasture plant identifier you'll ever come across!

• Covers 80 common pasture grasses - now you can learn to tell one grass from another. Some are toxic; many are friends. Can you tell what your horse is actually eating?

• Covers 175 toxic or noxious wildflowers, weeds, and ferns - each one rated for potential danger to your horse.

• Maps showing plant distributions for the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, and New Zealand (most toxic plant species occur in all countries)

Horses eat grass - so grass is supposed to be good for them - right?

Not necessarily! There are some grasses that horses definitely should not be eating. Get specific information on that as well as on:

• Toxic "broadleaf" plants that grow in pastures

• Fungi that grow on and in grasses - and the hot topic of mycotoxins

• High-sugar and high-carbohydrate grasses

• Pros and cons of feeding Alfalfa-Lucerne and other forage legumes

• Where you can have hay samples tested

• Extensive list of on-line resources

The horse farm is an ecosystem in which you and your horse live.

Every horse owner needs a working knowledge of what's growing on his property and what's in the hay. This is what your horse lives on and this is what he's eating. When your horse eats hay that's been shipped in from somewhere else, he is as good as living in the field where that hay was grown.

You can protect your horse with knowledge!

"Poison Plants in the Pasture" is a beautiful way to add a whole new dimension to your experience in horse ownership and land stewardship.

As with all Institute projects, we ship immediately upon receipt of order, and we pay all the shipping costs. Price for this two-volume work on CD-Rom is $52.95USD.

The Birdie Book: An Internal Geography of Horse and Rider

By Deb Bennett, Ph.D.

Dr. Deb speaks as a world-renowned authority on conformation, anatomy, gait, movement, and form-to-function. And the first thing that she will tell you is this: there is something a lot more important about a horse than its physical body.

"The Birdie Book" is about what goes on inside your horse - what makes him "tick". It is an exposition of what that mysterious thing is that seems to live inside a horse that makes him think and act so differently than we do. If you've ever wondered why horses do the things they do - why they shy at harmless objects - why they buck, bolt, or rear - why they dunk their hay in their water bucket - or stall-weave - or jump out of the beautiful green pasture you've provided for them - then this is the book you need to look into.

The Birdie Book" contains about 230 pages of text and 500 photographs and drawings showing horses in every situation the ordinary rider is likely to encounter. The photos all carry Dr. Deb's expert commentary as to what's motivating the horse or causing him to respond or act in a certain way. Many of the photos show horses' facial and body expressions. One purpose of the book is thus to help beginners learn to "read" their horse better. This is not only the best basis for training, but fundamental to safety.

Another purpose of "The Birdie Book" is to help owners learn to handle and ride their horses better. The central theme is that the horse's inner life - his mind, emotions, and spirit - govern his outer or physical being. "The Birdie Book" clearly explains how to harness both parts of your horse so that you become able to work with the whole horse. Specific approaches for getting your horse to want to do what you want him to do, as well as clear explanations of the physical aids and cues, are given throughout..

Dr. Deb's approach to horsemanship is strictly classical yet has nothing to do with any form of competition. It's about joy and companionship, trust and motivation, subtlety and courtesy. It's about achieving the High School with 100% commitment and zero strain.

If this is the kind of relationship you'd like to have with your horse, then "The Birdie Book" is for you.

Please be aware that The Birdie Book is a book on CD-Rom. There is no printed version of The Birdie Book, because it comprises some 700 pages of information, much of it in color. Publication on CD-Rom allows us to bring this work to you economically. The Birdie Book text can be downloaded through the purchaser's desktop printer or read on-screen.

Conquerors: The Roots of New World Horsemanship

This marvelous 432-page volume tells the story of mounted horsemanship from its beginnings in prehistory to the days of the Spanish conquest of the New World. An American Library Association "Best in Category" winner, this book offers the easy readability of a novel yet the technical depth of a college textbook.

In this landmark work, Dr. Deb tackles one of the grandest stories in the history of the world. Native warriors, desert nomads, Norman knights, Spanish conquistadors, Argentinian gauchos, Tejano colonists and California vaqueros all contribute to the birth of the unique and varied horse cultures of the New World. Provocative and fascinating, we guarantee that "Conquerors" is one book that you will not be able to put down.

With some 500 illustrations, maps, quotations from rare original sources and an extensive bibliography and index, "Conquerors" covers the history of every country in the New World that has ever bred horses of Iberian background.

This volume is an invaluable resource not only for owners, breeders, and aficionados, but for teachers who need an authoritative and well-researched volume on the history of horsemanship.
