ESI Knowledge Base - Introduction
Knowledge Base is the section of our website where we showcase Dr. Deb's best work in print on anatomy, biomechanics, conformation, horsemanship, riding, education and communication with the horse - themes very dear to our hearts, but also very good for our minds.

Topics covered here are those that should be of primary concern to all educated riders: straightness, the "ring of muscles" mechanism for collection, the origin and relationships of the horse species, where and when domestication occurred, how the human skeleton works in the saddle, at what age horses mature and the implications for starting colts and training horses. Reading of this kind can be a major aid in developing true horsemanship.

Every paper posted here - and the list grows every year - is free for you to download. So, if you'd prefer to peruse these works on paper rather than on screen, please feel free to print them through your desktop setup.
"Lessons From Woody"

I originally constructed the "Woody" model to test and clarify certain principles which pertain to orthopedics in four-legged animals. By means of Woody, whether you are a farrier, chiropractor, or rider, you are going to be able to rise above the foot, the leg, and even the limb to a global concept which unites the horse's body with its feet. From now on, you will truly be shoeing -- treating -- or riding -- the whole horse.

"True Collection"

You won't find it in a "frame" or a head set. No, says Dr. Deb, the perfect posture for ridden performance is shaped by your horse's spine.

"The "Mammalian Species" Paper: Equus caballus"

This article reproduces the text of this paper exactly as it was printed, with the addition of a few more recent references. Due to constraints of space and budget, only four illustrations, all in black and white, appeared in the original publication. In this web site we fortunately have no such limitations, and so the distribution maps have been rendered much more clearly and usefully in color, and other helpful illustrations have been added.

"Who's Best Built to Ride?"

Recognizing the Anatomical Differences Between Men and Women and Revising Traditional Teaching Techniques May Make Better Riders of Both Genders

"The Origin and Relationships of the Mustang, Barb and Arabian Horse"

The article which follows was commissioned in 2002 by the remarkable Viggo Mortensen, who starred as Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy, and who thereafter completely transformed himself to become Frank T. Hopkins for the film "Hidalgo".

"Timing and Rate of Skeletal Maturation in Horses,
with Comments on Starting Colts and the State of the Industry"

One of the most widely-read and widely-requested pieces of information contained in our ESI Website has been the following article which we familiarly refer to as "The Ranger piece." By 2005, with our permission this article has been re-printed in more than 75 magazines and riding-club newsletters in countries as far away as South Africa, Scotland, and New Zealand. Without our permission it has also been posted on about a gazillion websites and "boards", and, I am sure – one way or another -- read by many thousands of people.
